Diabetic foot is a dangerous complication of diabetes that you can avoid. How?
Diabetic foot is a very serious complication of diabetes that already affects ten percent of diabetics in Poland. Diabetic foot complications can have serious consequences. In the UK alone, 100 patients suffering from diabetes have a foot amputated every week. You can prevent diabetic foot complications.
Diabetic foot
The diabetic foot is the most common complication of diabetes; it occurs quite frequently, in as many as 10% of diabetics. Diabetes incidence statistics are constantly rising. The forecasts are not optimistic, as it is predicted that by 2030, over a dozen percent of the population in Poland may have diabetes, and thus the forecasts for the occurrence of diabetic foot may be higher. However, you should know that diabetic foot complications can be avoided. The risk forecasts for developing a diabetic foot can be lower.
Diabetic foot – causes:
A diabetic foot occurs as a result of a consistently high blood glucose level, which causes damage to arteries and blood vessels. As a result of this damage, their elasticity decreases, which in turn leads to the occlusion of blood vessels, intensifying atherosclerosis. When tissues lack proper blood supply, disorders and abnormalities begin to form. Damage to blood vessels increases blood viscosity, making it difficult for platelets to aggregate under such conditions, leading to the formation of blood clots in the foot. This is followed by dangerous tissue hypoxia. In addition to those mentioned, there is also peripheral nerve disorder, i.e., neuropathy.
Diabetic foot – symptoms:
There are two main syndromes of diabetic foot symptoms. These are the diabetic foot syndromes:
- Neuropathic (damage to the peripheral vascular system)
- Ischemic (poor circulation in the foot)
The former manifests as a loss of sensation in the foot, with pain felt much less acutely, resulting in the so-called "stocking effect," accompanied by sensations of burning, tingling, and prickling in the foot. Weakening of bone and muscle tension leads to necrosis and foot deformities. In turn, the ischemic syndrome is chronic tissue hypoxia that causes tissue necrosis, with symptoms including clots, ulcers, cracks in the foot, nail deformities, and bluing of the foot. For both diabetic foot syndromes, the final symptom is foot destruction, pain, infections, and the inability to walk. Therefore, prevention and foot care are so important.
How to take care of a diabetic's feet to minimize the risk of developing a diabetic foot?
Healthy diabetic feet depend primarily on managing blood sugar levels and foot care. Diabetics have particularly sensitive feet and feel less pressure on their feet than healthy people. Consequently, they should primarily wear appropriate shoes and specialized non-binding socks. A diabetic's feet should be especially protected from getting wet, cold, and injured. Until now, there were no medical socks available in Poland that could help avoid diabetic foot complications. Fortunately, they are now available. Specialized medical socks Reflexa® Diabetic are the most advanced medical socks for diabetics. Not only do they have a professional design and are antibacterial, but they also increase microcirculation in the foot, oxygenate, nourish, and regenerate tissues, which can help restore foot health. Other medical socks for diabetics available on the market do not increase circulation; they only have a design that does not block blood flow. Reflexa® socks are the only ones that help restore health to feet thanks to the innovative Quattroxy™ microcirculation enhancement technology.
